Thematic Preface:

In a world driven by globalization and interconnectedness, it is important to recognize and celebrate the diverse cultures and artistic expressions that emerge from the edges of our continents. The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre in New Plymouth aims to do just that with their new exhibition, showcasing the unique and powerful work of four indigenous artists from south and eastern Taiwan. By fostering conversations with artists from the edge of Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa (the Pacific Ocean), the Gallery continues its commitment to championing the voices and perspectives of marginalized communities.

Historically, the Pacific Ocean has been a vital conduit for cultural exchange, serving as a meeting point between continents and facilitating the flow of people, ideas, and artistic inspiration. Indigenous communities from the region have long navigated these waters, drawing upon their rich cultural heritage to create artwork that speaks to their lived experiences and challenges the dominant narratives.

The exhibition at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre builds upon this legacy, bringing together the works of four talented indigenous artists from south and eastern Taiwan. Their art reflects the unique cultural landscapes of their respective communities, exploring themes of identity, heritage, and socio-political struggles.

With this exhibition, the Gallery aims to provoke a critical dialogue on the complex issues faced by indigenous peoples in the contemporary world. By highlighting the artistry and innovation of these artists, the exhibition challenges preconceived notions and fosters a deeper understanding of the diverse experiences found on the edge of Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa.

As we immerse ourselves in this stunning showcase of indigenous art, let us remember the importance of embracing diversity and honoring the voices of those on the peripheries. By doing so, we open ourselves up to new perspectives and pave the way for meaningful cross-cultural connections that empower and inspire.
