Open call: Summer Lab Porto 2024 - Announcements - e-flux

Thematic Preface:

In the realm of architecture, the boundaries between creativity and functionality have always been fluid. Architects, like dancers, possess a unique ability to transform spaces into living, breathing works of art. The intertwining of these two disciplines not only results in visually striking structures but also fosters an exploration of movement and human interaction within these spaces. It is in this spirit that Dancing Architects, in collaboration with Porto, announces its open call for their highly anticipated 2024 Summer Lab.

Porto, a city renowned for its historical significance in architecture and the arts, serves as an ideal backdrop for this visionary endeavor. Steeped in centuries of architectural heritage, Porto harmoniously combines traditional elements with contemporary designs. Notable landmarks such as the Dom Luís I Bridge, Clerigos Tower, and Casa da Música stand as testaments to the city’s commitment to architectural innovation.

Reflecting on the historical lineage of architecture, we find inspiration from the groundbreaking works of Antoni Gaudí and Frank Gehry. Their unconventional and visionary creations, such as Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia in Barcelona and Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, have challenged and reshaped architectural norms. By merging sculpture, movement, and innovative construction techniques, these architects have brought newfound dynamism to the field.

Today, architects continue to push the boundaries of their craft by exploring the intersections between architecture and dance. The concept of “architectural choreography” has emerged as a way to conceptualize the relationship between spatial design and human movement. This artistic dialogue, pioneered by renowned figures such as Elizabeth Streb and William Forsythe, has paved the way for new possibilities. Architects now seek to create environments that invite movement, provoke interaction, and inspire a sense of awe.

Dancing Architects’ 2024 Summer Lab in Porto invites architects from all corners of the globe to immerse themselves in this dynamic dialogue. Participants will have the opportunity to collaborate with renowned architects, dancers, and artists to explore the ideas of kinetic architecture, site-specific performances, and the fusion of movement and built form. By embracing the rich architectural heritage of Porto and embracing the principles of architectural choreography, the Summer Lab aims to ignite a spark of creativity that will shape the future of architecture.

Join this groundbreaking initiative as Dancing Architects, in partnership with Porto, invites the global architectural community to reimagine our built environment through the lens of movement and dance.
