Thematic Preface: Exploring the Boundaries of Art and Nature
By John Tain | Curator, Lahore Biennale Foundation
Dear friends and art enthusiasts,
It is with great pleasure that I announce the launch of the third edition of the Lahore Biennale, titled “Of Mountains and Seas”. This year’s Biennale aims to immerse audiences in a thought-provoking exploration of the intricate relationship between art and nature, urging a reconsideration of our place within the natural world.
Throughout history, humankind has strived to understand and express its connection with the environment in which it dwells. From ancient cave paintings that depict the harmony between early civilizations and their surroundings to contemporary installations that challenge conventional boundaries, art has served as a medium for introspection and dialogue about our complex relationship with nature.
Since its inception in 2017, the Lahore Biennale Foundation has been committed to showcasing innovative artworks that engage with sociopolitical, cultural, and environmental issues. “Of Mountains and Seas” builds upon this legacy, inviting artists from around the globe to engage with the rich history and diverse landscapes of Lahore.
The chosen theme draws inspiration from the ancient Chinese text “Shan Hai Jing” (Classic of Mountains and Seas), which chronicles mythical creatures, geographical features, and celestial beings. This text presents a metaphorical tapestry in which human interactions with nature are as vital as the tales themselves. By referencing this ancient work, we seek to create a dialogue between different cultures and time periods while reflecting on the profound relevance of these stories in our contemporary reality.
As we confront unprecedented global challenges such as climate change, deforestation, and the depletion of natural resources, “Of Mountains and Seas” aims to foster a deeper understanding of the delicate balance between human existence and the environment. The Biennale encapsulates the urgency of addressing these pressing issues, encouraging artistic interpretations that provoke critical reflection and inspire positive action.
We believe that art has the power to transcend linguistic barriers, ignite meaningful conversations, and ignite change. By bringing together artists, critics, scholars, and enthusiasts, we hope to create a platform where diverse perspectives converge, intertwining the realms of art, nature, and human experience.
In addition to the main exhibitions, the Lahore Biennale Foundation has organized an array of workshops, seminars, and performances to further enrich the visitor’s experience. These ancillary events will deepen our engagement with the Biennale’s central theme, ensuring a comprehensive exploration of humanity’s interconnectedness with the natural world.
I extend my warmest invitation to all of you to participate in this extraordinary artistic journey. Together, let’s embark on a visual and intellectual exploration of “Of Mountains and Seas”, and reshape our perceptions, practices, and responsibilities towards the environment we inhabit.
Yours sincerely,
John Tain
