Fall 2024 public program - Announcements - e-flux

Welcome to the Fall 2024 public program at the Humanities Institute! From September 12 to November 23, 2024, we are embracing the ideas of history, memory, and the power of collective narratives in shaping society. This curated selection of events and discussions seeks to explore the dynamic relationship between the past and the present, and how it influences our understanding of the world.

Unearthing the Past: Delving into Collective Memory

Throughout history, human societies have relied on collective memory to establish a sense of identity, foster social cohesion, and shape their futures. Just as each individual relies on personal memories to construct their sense of self, societies also construct their collective memory, which serves as a foundation for their shared values and beliefs. However, this construction is often shaped by those in power, leading to contested narratives and the erasure of marginalized voices.

In our search to understand collective memory, we must acknowledge the role of historical events and their lasting impact. From the grand scale of revolutions and wars to the more nuanced aspects of cultural heritage, every society grapples with the interplay between remembered and forgotten histories. What stories have been silenced, untold, or rewritten? How can we navigate a complex terrain of collective memory that is both empowering and fraught with biases?

Remembering Our Shared Humanity: Reflections on Historical Tragedies

As we engage with the concept of collective memory, it is crucial to confront the tragedies of the past. Remembering historical events such as genocides, mass atrocities, and colonial oppression can remind us of the deep scars etched into the fabric of our societies. By recognizing these painful chapters, we can honor the resilience of affected communities and strive to build a more just and compassionate future.

From the Holocaust to the Rwandan genocide, from Indigenous displacement to systematic enslavement, our collective memory must grapple with the atrocities that have shaped the world we live in today. Through empathetic exploration of these tragedies, we can foster a deeper understanding of the complexities within our societies and work towards reconciliation and healing.

Voices of Resistance: Reclaiming Narratives

As we delve into collective memory, it is crucial to amplify the voices of those who were historically marginalized or silenced. By centering these perspectives, we challenge dominant narratives and disrupt the perpetuation of inequalities rooted in history. From indigenous histories to accounts of resistance movements, these untold stories provide a critical counterpoint to the official narratives that often cast a narrow spotlight on the powerful few.

Historical and contemporary movements continue to fight against oppression and inequality, demanding justice and recognition. By listening to these voices of resistance, we can actively engage in reshaping our collective memory, rectifying historical injustices, and working towards a more inclusive society.

Embrace the Journey

We invite you to embark on this intellectual journey of exploration, reflection, and reclamation. Our Fall 2024 public program will feature a diverse array of experts, scholars, and activists who will guide us through critical conversations, thought-provoking exhibitions, and immersive experiences.
