City Sparks shines a spotlight on Bradford communities, celebrating diversity of achievement in STEM and providing a platform for underrepresented voices. We have collaborated with local community organisations to create an exciting programme of events for the whole family to enjoy, taking place in venues including The Broadway, WomenZone and MAPA Cultural Arts Centre.
The Real McCoy: An Introduction to Black Inventors
- Thursday 24 October – Thursday 31 October 2024
- 08.00–19.00
- The Broadway shopping centre, BD1 1JR
The Real McCoy: An Introduction to Black Inventors is a fascinating exhibition created by local educator Chris Peltier that showcases the hundreds of contributions made by Black scientists to objects and technology that we use in our daily lives. This includes film, radio, computing, gaming, emergency services and much more. Many of these inventors are not widely known, often due to institutional racism and records being lost.
The National Science and Media Museum is proud to bring this exhibition to The Broadway for visitors and shoppers to experience. The exhibition, which is suitable for all ages, will also be accompanied by hands-on family activities, objects from the museum’s handling collection and short talks by creator Chris Peltier.
Please note: activities and short talks will run Tuesday 29 October and Wednesday 30 October 10.00–16.00 only.
Skill and Hunar Celebration Event
- Tuesday 29 October 2024
- 10.00–14.00
- WomenZone, Hubert St, BD3 9TE
Over summer our Young People’s Producer Sam Lionheart has been working closely with members of the Sound and Vision Youth Forum and a group of Elders at local organisation WomenZone on a brilliant intergenerational learning project. ‘Hunar’ means ‘artfulness’ in Urdu, and the workshops have seen everything from iPad drawing, flower garland-making, and samosa chaat-making. We will be celebrating the project’s success with an event this October – head down to WomenZone community centre to join in.
Cultural Arts Day at MAPA
