The European Pavilion 2022: Shaping the Future of Europe
Preface: Reflecting on Europe’s past and present to collectively envision its future
Commissioned by the European Cultural Foundation and produced by espaço agora now and partners, this year’s edition of The European Pavilion culminates in Lisbon from November 7 to 9. As Europe stands at a critical juncture, grappling with various geopolitical and socio-economic challenges, this event offers a platform for dialogue and collective imagination in shaping the continent’s future.
Europe has always been a melting pot of diverse cultures, histories, and perspectives. From the ancient Greeks and Romans to the Renaissance, Enlightenment, and modernity, Europe has actively contributed to the growth of human knowledge, art, and scientific discovery. Yet, it is equally known for its tumultuous past marked by conflicts, divisions, and power struggles.
In the aftermath of the devastating World Wars, Europe embarked on a remarkable journey of integration, driven by the desire to prevent further bloodshed and foster economic cooperation. The establishment of the European Union, accompanied by the Schengen Agreement and the Eurozone, represented unprecedented efforts to build a united and prosperous Europe.
However, the European project is now facing significant challenges. Brexit has left a profound impact, revealing deep divisions within the EU and raising questions about the future of European integration. Amidst rising populism, nationalism, and polarization, it is crucial to address these fissures and reimagine a Europe that is more inclusive, sustainable, and responsive to the needs of its citizens.
The European Pavilion serves as a forum where artists, scholars, policymakers, and activists come together to engage in thought-provoking discussions, artistic expressions, and collaborative projects. Through this multidisciplinary approach, it seeks to explore thematic threads that relate to the pressing issues of our time.
In this edition, The European Pavilion will focus on the following key topics:
- Climate Crisis and Sustainability: Urging Europe to lead the fight against climate change, promoting sustainable practices, and fostering a circular economy.
- Social Justice and Equality: Addressing social inequalities, discrimination, and exclusion, while striving for a cohesive and equitable Europe.
- Democratic Transformations: Examining the challenges to European democracies, promoting participatory decision-making mechanisms, and reinforcing the rule of law.
- Migration and Integration: Discussing the management of migration flows, fostering integration and social cohesion, and embracing diverse cultural identities.
As we convene in Lisbon, we acknowledge the importance of history and memory in shaping our collective understanding of Europe. The city itself bears scars of past dictatorships, while celebrating the resilience and resistance of its people. It serves as a potent reminder of the power of hope, solidarity, and cultural exchange in envisioning a better future.
With each edition of The European Pavilion, we strive to foster a sense of European identity that is enriched by our shared heritage and strengthened through collaboration. By engaging thoughtfully with the challenges and opportunities before us, we can collectively shape a Europe that is more sustainable, just, and inclusive.
“We cannot change the past, but we can shape the future.”
